In the past years, Sudbury, one of the smallest clubs in Ontario, has successfully raised more money than any other synchro club in the province. We hope it will be the same again this year. The event, which took place October 25th, consisted of synchro athletes relaying a lit candle across the Laurentian University Pool for an hour. The night was amazing! It was the 14th Burning Bright event and it was an incredible success! The club wishes the thank the athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers, family, and friends who all showed support. But that's not all. There was also a Porketta Bingo evening for the cause which raised a lot of money as well as other events! From the Sudbury Hyundai empowering women's event, the Scarlet Tomato lunch and dinner, the Event Bake Sale to our Merchandise sales. Everything was a huge success and we tip our hats to all of you who participated, volunteered, encouraged, spread the word, and most importantly donated. This year's Burning Bright event was the BIGGEST one yet, we are overwhelmed with our club's total of $18 333.36 in donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. Thank you Sudbury.

Podium placings for our 13-15 year duet teams.
Silver medal swim for the seasoned duet team of Emily Binks and Sarah Ieropoli scoring 59.667, a strong performance in a large group of 20 duet teams.  Waterloo finishing first with 61.667.
Laurel Duguay and Georgia Speck also placed on the podium with their duet.  Finishing in 5th place scoring 57.667

Not to be outdone our 11-12 year team finished 5th out of 10 teams in the 11 year age group.  Their score of 51.167 was enough to secure the 5th place podium finish amongst the field of 10 clubs. A great result despite being short a swimmer due to illness.

This was a provincial figure meet and we had great success in the pool with  many personal bests and a few podium placings.  A great start to the season!

13-15 year age group (139 participants) - we had 9 swimmers from our club

Sudbury Synchro Club has been around since the 1970s. It saw its debut at the old YMCA downtown where the athletes barely had enough room to swim their routines! The Club was originally known as the ‘Sudbury Y Otters’. After the closing of the Larch Street YMCA the club moved to the Copper Cliff Dow Pool until it relocated to its current location at the Laurentian University Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool in 2003. As one can imagine, the club has grown dramatically over the years with over 25 girls who swim competitively, more than 50 recreational swimmers and approximately 15 coaches. The club is very active in and out of the community. In 2015, the Amazing Race joined the club for one of their episodes. Many great laughs were had with the brothers Sean and Brent Sweeny. Every year, the Club hosts the local Burnight Bright event, an event run by Synchro Ontario to raise funds for Breast Cancer. In fact, over the years, Sudbury Synchro has raised over $40 000 and is the top Synchro club in the Province!
 
With a Water Show during the Festive season, another in the spring and a Banquet for the athletes and parents in June, there is never a dull moment for the executive committee. Sudbury Synchro is a not for profit organization run by dedicated parents and the Club’s Head Coach. This brings with it an atmosphere of benevolence where everyone feels welcome and part of a bigger team. After all, the parents all wear t-shirts with the slogan “Team Behind the Team” written on the backs during competitive meets. We hope that you will enjoy this blog as you follow these young athletes through their journey. Synchronized swimming is not just a sport. Through synchro, swimmers learn all about team building, leadership, respect, autonomy and the importance of being true to oneself.
